We had a discussion at the Parish Council on Tuesday about the Tarporley proposals for a street party on Friday 8th May and, to be honest, the feeling around the 8 Councillors present was divided. For some it was an event we ought to try and remember, for others it was a commemoration too far – but what do you think? Before we put something in place for our Parish or either of the two communities of Cotebrook or Utkinton, what would you like us to do? It is a Public or Bank Holiday (moved by someone in high office in Westminster from Monday 4th) and so shops might be closed, or they might not – who knows?
Three options spring to mind;
- Hold street parties in each of our two communities
- Prevail upon Rose Farm to have an event (akin to our Jubilee Celebrations in 2012)
- Open our two village Halls for afternoon tea?
Or we can simply remember that this was the day when ‘Victory in Europe’ ended the war raging across our continent – VJ Day is officially on August 15th, ought we to commemorate that too? Could you let is know please?
I headed this ‘blog’ with VED et al because the day before, the powers that be have declared an election to be held to elect the next Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Cheshire West and Chester and on Thursday 7th May our Village Halls will be commandeered for Polling Stations.
I would like a street party. Mainly because I remember the street parties on the actual day. It is one of my very earliest memories. Of course the weather is always a potential problem. The Rose Farm proposal sounds good and if all the parish goes there it will be a bigger occasion. Ted Scott.
